How to Bring a Joomla Website Back Online
When Joomla's built-in Site Offline setting is enabled, ordinary visitors see the offline presentation instead of the normal frontend. Bringing the site back online is normally a single Global Configuration change, but it is worth verifying the public site afterward so a cache, access rule, or unfinished maintenance problem is not mistaken for Joomla still being offline.
Turn Site Offline off
- Sign in to Joomla Administrator.
- Open System → Setup Panel → Global Configuration.
- On the Site tab, locate Site Offline.
- Set Site Offline to No.
- Select Save or Save & Close.
Verify the site as an ordinary visitor
Open the frontend in a private or incognito browser window where you are not signed in. Test the home page and several representative internal URLs. Anonymous testing matters because a user with Joomla's Offline Access permission can see the frontend while the public still receives the offline page.
If visitors still see the offline page
Reopen Global Configuration and confirm Site Offline remains set to No. If it reverted or Joomla reported a save problem, investigate the root configuration.php file's ownership and writability. Do not make the whole Joomla installation broadly writable as a workaround.
If the setting is saved correctly, clear or refresh only the caching layers that can still serve an old response: Joomla caching where applicable, a reverse proxy, CDN, host-level cache, or browser cache. Test from another network or an uncached request before changing unrelated Joomla settings.
Check maintenance controls outside Joomla
Hosting platforms, web servers, CDNs, security services, and deployment systems can independently place a site behind a maintenance page or access restriction. If Joomla's Site Offline setting is No but the public site remains unavailable, identify which layer is returning the response. A branded host maintenance page, HTTP authentication prompt, 403, 503, or proxy-generated page is not fixed by toggling Joomla's offline switch.
Verify the site is actually ready
Before announcing that maintenance is complete, test login, important forms, extension-driven pages, navigation, and any workflow changed during maintenance. If you updated Joomla or extensions, also check Administrator for post-update warnings or database/schema notices relevant to the work performed.
Verification checklist
- Site Offline is set to No and remains saved.
- The home page loads anonymously.
- Representative internal URLs work.
- No CDN, proxy, host, or browser cache is serving a stale offline response.
- Critical site functions changed during maintenance have been tested.
