How to Change Joomla Error Reporting Levels

Joomla lets an administrator choose how PHP errors are reported for the site. The right level depends on whether the site is operating normally or you are performing controlled troubleshooting. Use the setting to gather evidence, not as a permanent substitute for fixing the underlying error.

Open Error Reporting

Go to System → Setup Panel → Global Configuration → Server and locate Error Reporting.

Understand the levels

  • System Default leaves the reporting level to the server's PHP configuration.
  • None switches off Joomla's PHP error reporting output.
  • Simple provides a more limited reporting level.
  • Maximum requests the broadest error reporting Joomla exposes through this setting.

Available labels can evolve between Joomla generations, so use the choices shown by your installed version rather than copying an old screenshot blindly.

Choose a level for the job

For a healthy production site, avoid exposing detailed errors to anonymous visitors. For troubleshooting, temporarily use a level that makes the failure visible, reproduce it, and capture the evidence. Maximum can be useful for hard-to-explain PHP failures, but more output is not automatically more useful.

Account for server configuration

System Default delegates to PHP/server configuration. Hosting policies, PHP configuration, and server logging can therefore affect what appears on screen and what is written to logs. If changing Joomla's setting does not produce the expected evidence, inspect the host's PHP and web-server logs rather than repeatedly changing unrelated Joomla options.

Return to the intended level

When diagnosis is complete, restore the production value, save, and test the affected page in a private browser window. Keep the captured error with the support or development record instead of leaving detailed reporting exposed.
