How to Change the Default Joomla Editor

Joomla lets you choose the default text editor used when users edit articles and other editor-enabled content. The global setting provides the site-wide default, while an individual user's profile can override it. That distinction is important when one administrator sees a different editor from everyone else.

Change the global default editor

  1. Sign in to Joomla Administrator.
  2. Open System → Setup Panel → Global Configuration.
  3. On the Site tab, locate Default Editor.
  4. Select the editor you want Joomla to use by default.
  5. Select Save or Save & Close.

The available choices depend on the editor plugins installed and enabled on the site. Do not assume every Joomla installation has the same third-party editor choices.

Test the editor

Open an article for editing or create a temporary unpublished article. Confirm the expected editor loads, its toolbar appears normally, and a harmless change can be saved. If the editor area is blank or JavaScript errors appear, check the selected editor plugin, browser console, Content Security Policy, template/Administrator overrides, and third-party plugins rather than repeatedly changing the global setting.

If one user still sees another editor

Joomla allows registered users to have a personal editor preference. A user-specific selection can take precedence over the global Default Editor. Open that user's profile and review the editor preference. Set it to the intended editor or to the option that follows the site default, depending on the choices exposed by the installed Joomla version.

Editor choice does not change stored article content automatically

Changing editors affects the editing interface; it does not automatically rewrite existing article HTML. Different editors can filter, normalize, or visually represent markup differently when content is opened and saved. Before switching editors on a site with complex custom HTML, test representative content and keep a backup.

If the desired editor is missing

Open System → Manage → Plugins and verify that the relevant editor plugin is installed and enabled. Third-party editors may also require their own configuration or compatibility update. Do not enable an obsolete editor solely to recover an old toolbar without first checking compatibility with the installed Joomla and PHP versions.

Verification checklist

  • The desired editor is selected in Global Configuration.
  • A representative article opens and saves correctly.
  • User-level editor overrides are understood.
  • The editor plugin is enabled and compatible.
  • Complex existing HTML was tested before a site-wide editor change.
