How to Change the Joomla Log Folder
Joomla's log folder is the filesystem location used by Joomla's file logging unless a logger or extension explicitly chooses another path. Change it carefully: Joomla's official Global Configuration help warns that an invalid or unwritable log path can prevent the site from loading.
Prepare the destination folder
Create or choose a directory intended for Joomla logs. It must be writable by the PHP/web-server user that runs Joomla. Prefer a location protected from direct public download, and do not use a system-wide shared directory such as /tmp for Joomla's log folder.
Change Path to Log Folder
- Sign in to Joomla Administrator.
- Open System → Setup Panel → Global Configuration.
- Open the Logging tab.
- Set Path to Log Folder to the destination's absolute filesystem path.
- Select Save or Save & Close.
Use a server path, not a website URL. The saved global configuration is stored in Joomla's root configuration.php.
Verify before relying on the new path
Reopen Global Configuration and confirm the path was retained. If logging is enabled for a reproducible event, trigger that event and confirm a log file is created or updated in the new directory. Check ownership and permissions if Joomla cannot write there.
Recover from a bad log path
If Joomla stops loading immediately after a log-path change, correct the configured log path at the filesystem/configuration level. The relevant global configuration value is stored in configuration.php as the Joomla log-path setting. Restore the previously working absolute path or another valid writable path. Take care not to alter unrelated configuration values.
Do not assume every extension uses the global folder
Joomla's logging API allows code to specify a different text_file_path. Third-party extensions can therefore write elsewhere. If one extension's logs do not move after changing the global folder, check that extension's logging configuration or documentation before treating the global setting as broken.
Security and maintenance checks
- Keep logs outside public web access when practical.
- Grant only the filesystem access needed for PHP to write logs.
- Do not make the folder world-writable as a shortcut.
- Monitor disk usage if verbose logging is enabled.
- After migration to a new server, verify the absolute path because filesystem layouts often change.
