How to Change the Joomla Offline Image

Joomla's Global Configuration lets you choose an optional Offline Image for the default offline page. The image is part of the visitor-facing maintenance presentation; it does not control whether the site is offline. Choose an appropriately sized, web-ready image and verify the result anonymously.

Select the offline image

  1. Sign in to Joomla Administrator.
  2. Open System → Setup Panel → Global Configuration.
  3. On the Site tab, find the offline settings.
  4. Use Offline Image to select or upload the image you want displayed by the default offline page.
  5. Select Save or Save & Close.

Current Joomla help recommends an offline image under 400 pixels wide. Keeping the asset modest also helps the maintenance page load quickly.

Use an appropriate image

Prefer a normal web image with sensible dimensions and file size. The image should support the maintenance message rather than contain the only copy of important text. Visitors using assistive technology, image blocking, or a slow connection should still understand that the site is temporarily unavailable from the page text.

Preview the public offline page

When Site Offline is enabled, open the frontend in a private/incognito window and confirm the image loads, scales acceptably, and does not obscure the message or login area. Test at both desktop and narrow/mobile widths. Do not rely on a privileged logged-in session because Joomla's Offline Access permission can change what you see.

If the old image still appears

Confirm the new Offline Image remains selected after saving. Then check browser cache, Joomla/page cache, CDN or reverse-proxy cache, and any template override of the offline page. If the page source points to the new file but the browser shows the old pixels, a cache is more likely than a failed Joomla setting.

If no image appears

Verify the selected media file still exists and is publicly readable when the offline page is served. Check the browser network panel for a failed image request and note its HTTP status. A 404 indicates a missing or incorrect path; a 403 points toward access rules or permissions. Also check whether the active template overrides Joomla's offline layout and intentionally omits or replaces the configured image.

Changing the image does not enable offline mode

The Offline Image and Site Offline are separate settings. You can prepare the image and message while the site is online, then enable Site Offline during the maintenance window. Likewise, changing or removing the image does not bring an offline site back online.
