How to Change the Joomla Site Name

The Joomla Site Name is a global configuration value used in several places by Joomla, including the Administrator title and the default offline page. Changing it is straightforward, but a template, menu item, mail setting, or custom module can contain separate branding, so changing Site Name does not perform a site-wide text replacement.

Change the Site Name

  1. Sign in to Joomla Administrator.
  2. Open System → Setup Panel → Global Configuration.
  3. On the Site tab, locate Site Name.
  4. Enter the new website name.
  5. Select Save or Save & Close.

Verify the saved value

Reopen Global Configuration and confirm the new Site Name is still present. Joomla stores the global configuration in the root configuration.php file. If the change will not persist, investigate that file's ownership and writability and the hosting environment rather than repeatedly resubmitting the form or making the whole site broadly writable.

Check the frontend and browser titles

Open the frontend in a fresh browser session and check the home page plus several internal pages. The visible header or logo may come from the active template, a module, or an image rather than Site Name. Browser titles can also be affected by menu-item page-title settings and Joomla SEO title options. If the old name remains in only one location, trace that output instead of assuming the global value failed.

Check offline and mail branding

If you use Joomla's offline mode, the configured Site Name can appear on the offline presentation, so verify it there during a safe maintenance window if appropriate. Outbound mail has a separate From Name setting. Review mail configuration and third-party newsletter or transactional-mail extensions if the organization name changed.

Check literal references to the old name

Articles, custom HTML modules, menu metadata, category metadata, template overrides, images, structured-data extensions, and other extension settings may contain the old name as literal content. Joomla does not rewrite those records when Site Name changes. Search deliberately and edit only genuine branding references.

Verification checklist

  • Global Configuration retains the new Site Name after reload.
  • The frontend shows the intended branding.
  • Browser titles are correct on representative pages.
  • Offline presentation is correct if used.
  • Mail From Name and third-party branding are reviewed separately.
