How to Change the Joomla Temporary Folder
Joomla uses its temporary folder while handling files needed for operations such as extension installation and other temporary processing. If a site has been moved, restored, or its server paths have changed, the saved temporary-folder path may no longer point to a valid writable directory.
Prepare the new temporary folder
Choose a directory that exists on the server and is writable by the PHP/web-server process that runs Joomla. Use a filesystem path, not a website URL. Avoid making a directory broadly writable just to make an error disappear; ownership and permissions should be appropriate for the hosting environment.
Change Path to Temp Folder
- Sign in to Joomla Administrator.
- Open System → Setup Panel → Global Configuration.
- Open the Server tab.
- Under Server, find Path to Temp Folder.
- Enter the writable server filesystem path for the new temporary directory.
- Select Save or Save & Close.
Joomla's current Global Configuration help describes this field as the writable folder used to store temporary files. Global Configuration values are recorded in the site's root configuration.php.
Verify the change
Reopen Global Configuration and confirm the new path remains saved. Then open System → Information Panel → System Information → Folder Permissions and review Joomla's writable-directory checks. Finally, perform the operation that required temporary storage, such as installing a known-good extension package, if that is appropriate for the site.
If the new path does not work
- Confirm the directory actually exists on the server.
- Confirm the path is a filesystem path rather than an
https://URL. - Check filesystem ownership and PHP write access.
- After a migration, do not reuse an absolute path copied from the old server unless that exact path exists on the new server.
- If Global Configuration will not save, inspect
configuration.phppermissions and the hosting environment rather than repeatedly changing the value.
Keep the change narrow
The Joomla temporary folder is not the same setting as the log folder, cache folder, or PHP session save path. Changing one does not repair the others. If several paths are wrong after a migration, verify each setting independently.
