How to Change the Joomla Time Zone
Joomla's global time-zone setting controls how dates and times are displayed when no user-specific preference overrides it. In current Joomla Global Configuration the field is labeled Website Time Zone. Choose the zone that represents the website's intended local time rather than trying to compensate by manually changing stored timestamps.
Change Website Time Zone
- Sign in to Joomla Administrator.
- Open System → Setup Panel → Global Configuration.
- Open the Server tab.
- In the Location section, find Website Time Zone.
- Select the appropriate city/time-zone entry.
- Select Save or Save & Close.
Use a real regional time zone
When the site represents a location that observes daylight-saving or other civil-time changes, choose the matching regional/city zone offered by Joomla. A fixed UTC offset may not follow future daylight-saving transitions the way a regional time-zone definition does.
Understand user-specific time zones
A Joomla user can have a personal time-zone preference. Where Joomla renders a date in user context, that preference can affect what the user sees. Therefore two authenticated users can legitimately see different local times even though the global Website Time Zone is the same. Check the affected user's profile before diagnosing that as a global configuration failure.
Verify the change with a known timestamp
After saving, inspect a known date/time in a controlled context, such as an article publishing time or another Joomla view whose time behavior you understand. Compare it with the intended local time and UTC offset for that date. Remember that daylight-saving offsets can differ by season.
Do not use the Joomla setting to repair the server clock
The Joomla display time zone and the operating system/PHP/database clocks are different layers. If logs, cron jobs, database timestamps, or external integrations have inconsistent clocks, establish which layer is wrong. Changing Website Time Zone simply to hide a server-clock problem can create new inconsistencies.
After changing time zone on an established site
Review scheduled publishing, scheduled tasks, event/calendar extensions, booking systems, and integrations that exchange timestamps. Well-designed systems store or exchange unambiguous times and convert for display, but third-party extensions may have their own time-zone configuration. Test time-sensitive workflows before assuming the global change governs every extension.
