How to Check Joomla PHP Limits and Server Settings
Joomla's System Information screen lets you inspect the PHP and server environment that is actually handling Joomla requests. Use it before changing limits: first identify the effective value, then determine which hosting or PHP configuration layer controls it.
Open System Information
- Sign in to Joomla Administrator.
- Open System → Information Panel → System Information.
- Review System Information for the server, database, PHP, and Joomla environment.
- Review PHP Settings for Joomla's summarized PHP checks.
- Use PHP Information for detailed PHP runtime values.
The screen is diagnostic. Joomla's official help states that these settings are not changed from System Information itself.
Check the limits that match the symptom
For memory failures, inspect memory_limit. For uploads, inspect upload_max_filesize and post_max_size; the effective upload capability can be constrained by more than one setting. For long-running requests, inspect max_execution_time and remember that web-server, proxy, PHP-FPM, or hosting timeouts can end a request independently of PHP's own value. For large forms, max_input_vars can also matter.
Check PHP features and extensions
The PHP Settings and PHP Information tabs can help confirm features such as ZIP, XML, multibyte-string support, session configuration, and disabled functions. Compare findings with the requirements for your installed Joomla version and the extension involved in the problem rather than enabling modules at random.
Check folder permissions separately
The Folder Permissions tab shows Joomla directories the web server is expected to write to. A PHP limit and a filesystem permission are different problems. If a directory is not writable, fix the ownership/permissions or hosting configuration for that path instead of increasing PHP memory or execution limits.
Make changes in the correct layer
Some values are controlled by the host and cannot be changed from Joomla. Depending on the server, changes may belong in a hosting panel, PHP configuration, PHP-FPM pool, web-server configuration, database server, or reverse proxy. After a change, return to Joomla System Information and verify that the effective value actually changed.
Record before-and-after evidence
When troubleshooting, record the original effective value, the requested change, and the value Joomla reports afterward. This prevents confusion when multiple PHP handlers or configuration files exist and makes it easier to reverse an unsuccessful change.
