How to Check the PHP Version Joomla Is Using
When troubleshooting Joomla, check the PHP version that the Joomla web application is actually using. A hosting control panel or command-line php -v can report a different PHP installation or handler from the one serving the website.
Check PHP from Joomla Administrator
- Sign in to Joomla Administrator.
- Open System → Information Panel → System Information.
- On the System Information tab, locate the PHP version reported for the current web request.
This is the most useful first check because Joomla is reporting the environment it is running under.
Confirm with PHP Information when needed
On the same System Information screen, open the PHP Information tab. It exposes PHP's runtime information for the web request, including the PHP version and many loaded configuration values. This screen is read-only; Joomla does not change PHP settings from it.
Why another PHP version may disagree
Servers can have multiple PHP versions or handlers. The web server, a hosting control panel, command-line PHP, scheduled jobs, and different virtual hosts can use different binaries or configuration files. If Joomla reports one version and your shell reports another, treat Joomla's value as authoritative for Joomla web requests and then inspect the hosting/PHP handler configuration.
Check compatibility before changing PHP
Before switching PHP versions, verify the requirements of your installed Joomla release and all third-party extensions. A PHP change can also change loaded extensions, INI values, and the configuration file being used. Take a current backup and test important administrator and frontend workflows after the change.
Verification checklist
- System Information reports the expected PHP version.
- PHP Information agrees for the same web request.
- The selected PHP version is supported by your Joomla release.
- Required PHP extensions remain loaded.
- Important site functions work after any PHP-handler change.
