How to Check Your Joomla Version

Knowing the exact Joomla version matters when checking compatibility, applying updates, reporting a bug, or following documentation. Joomla displays its installed version in Administrator, and the System Information screen is a reliable place to confirm it together with the PHP and database environment.

Check the version in Administrator

  1. Sign in to Joomla Administrator.
  2. Open System → System Information.
  3. Find the Joomla version shown in the system information.
  4. Record the complete version number, including the minor and maintenance components.

Current-generation Joomla Administrator also commonly displays the Joomla version in the Administrator interface footer. System Information is preferable when you are collecting a broader diagnostic record.

Why the complete number matters

Two sites on the same major Joomla generation can have different fixes, security patches, APIs, or compatibility behavior. When asking for support, report the exact installed version rather than only "Joomla 5" or "Joomla 6."

Compare it with the update state

The installed version tells you what is running; it does not by itself tell you whether that release is current or supported. Use Joomla's update interface and official Joomla release information to determine whether an update is available. Back up the site before a significant update and verify extension compatibility when required.

If you cannot access Administrator

Do not guess from the site's appearance, template, or generator metadata. For recovery work, an experienced administrator can inspect Joomla core version information in the filesystem/source, but the exact file structure has changed across Joomla generations. Use version-appropriate official guidance or inspect the installed core code rather than relying on a legacy path from an old tutorial.

Record the environment with the version

For troubleshooting, also record the PHP and database versions shown by System Information. A problem attributed to Joomla may actually depend on the runtime or database environment, and those facts make a support report much more useful.
