How to Clear Expired Cache Data from Joomla
Joomla can remove cache data that has expired while leaving cache entries that are still current. This is different from deleting all cached data and is useful when you want routine cleanup without forcing every valid cache entry to be rebuilt.
Open Joomla's cache maintenance screen
- Sign in to Joomla Administrator.
- Open System → Maintenance Panel → Clear Cache.
- On the toolbar, select Clear Expired Cache.
Joomla's current Clear Cache help states that Clear Expired Cache deletes expired cache files while leaving cache files that are still current.
Allow the cleanup to finish
Expired-cache cleanup may take longer than deleting a selected cache group because Joomla has to determine which cached items have expired. Joomla's help warns that the operation can be resource intensive on sites with a large number of cached items. Avoid repeatedly launching it in parallel if the first run is still processing.
Know the difference from clearing all cache
Use Clear Expired Cache when the goal is to remove expired data only. Use the normal Delete/Delete All controls on the Clear Cache screen when you intentionally need to remove current cache data too—for example, when a current cached representation is preventing a recent site change from appearing. Clearing current cache can temporarily make requests slower while Joomla rebuilds cache entries.
Verify the result
After the operation completes, reload the Clear Cache screen and confirm normal Administrator operation. If you were troubleshooting stale output and the stale entry was still current rather than expired, expired-cache cleanup alone may not remove it; clear the relevant current cache group instead.
If cleanup times out
Large caches and server execution limits can make maintenance operations expensive. If the request times out, do not assume the cache system is corrupt. Review server/PHP limits and cache volume, and retry during a lower-traffic period if appropriate. Avoid deleting arbitrary filesystem directories unless you understand the active cache handler and the data stored there.
Remember that not every cache is Joomla's cache
A hosting platform, CDN, reverse proxy, browser, or third-party extension can maintain a separate cache. Clearing Joomla's expired cache does not purge those independent layers. If old content remains, identify which cache is serving it before changing Joomla settings.
