How to Configure Joomla Proxy Settings

Joomla can use proxy-related settings for two different situations: recognizing that the site is behind a load balancer or reverse proxy, and using an outbound proxy when Joomla itself must connect to external URLs. Configure only the function your environment actually requires; they solve different problems.

Open Joomla's Proxy settings

  1. Sign in to Joomla Administrator.
  2. Open System → Setup Panel → Global Configuration.
  3. Open the Server tab.
  4. Locate the Proxy panel.
  5. Review the options supplied by your Joomla version and hosting architecture.
  6. Save only after you have the correct proxy details from your network or hosting administrator.

Behind Load Balancer is for incoming requests

If Joomla is behind a load balancer or reverse proxy, Joomla's current Global Configuration help documents a Behind Load Balancer setting so Joomla can account for proxied request information such as client IP context. Enable it only when the site really is deployed behind that infrastructure and the proxy is configured correctly.

Outbound proxy is for Joomla's external connections

Some networks require applications to use a proxy server when connecting to the internet. Joomla documentation describes outbound proxy fields for the proxy host, port, username, and password. This can affect operations that retrieve external resources, including update-related connections. Obtain these values from the network administrator; do not guess them from the site's public hostname.

Do not confuse a reverse proxy with an outbound proxy

A reverse proxy receives requests on behalf of your Joomla site. An outbound proxy carries connections initiated by Joomla to other services. A site can use either, both, or neither. Enabling outbound proxy settings will not fix incorrect forwarded headers from a reverse proxy, and enabling Behind Load Balancer will not provide Joomla with outbound internet access.

Protect proxy credentials

If your outbound proxy requires authentication, treat its username and password as secrets. Limit access to Joomla configuration and backups that may contain configuration values. Do not paste credentials into support forums, screenshots, public logs, or documentation. Prefer a least-privilege proxy account when your infrastructure supports one.

Test after saving

Test the exact function that required the proxy. For outbound access, verify an appropriate Joomla operation can reach its external endpoint. For a reverse proxy/load balancer deployment, verify HTTPS detection, redirects, logging/client-IP behavior, authentication, and Administrator access. Watch the Joomla, web-server, proxy, and network logs for denied or misrouted requests.

If enabling the setting breaks the site

Revert the specific proxy change and verify the infrastructure before trying another value. Global Configuration persists to configuration.php, so a configuration-level recovery is possible if Administrator becomes inaccessible. Do not disable TLS validation, expose an open proxy, or trust arbitrary forwarded headers merely to make a connection succeed.
