How to Customize the Joomla Offline Message

Joomla can show a visitor-facing message when Site Offline is enabled. Current Global Configuration provides an Offline Message choice that can use a custom message or the site's language default. A useful custom message should explain the temporary condition without exposing technical or security-sensitive details.

Set a custom offline message

  1. Sign in to Joomla Administrator.
  2. Open System → Setup Panel → Global Configuration.
  3. On the Site tab, locate Site Offline and the related offline options.
  4. For Offline Message, choose Use Custom Message.
  5. Enter the text in the Custom Message field.
  6. Select Save or Save & Close.

Preview it as a public visitor

If the site is already offline, open the frontend in a private/incognito window. If it is currently live, schedule a safe maintenance window before enabling Site Offline merely to preview the message. Users with Offline Access can see a different result from anonymous visitors, so verify the public presentation without an authenticated Joomla session.

Write a useful maintenance message

Keep the message concise and visitor-focused. State that the site is temporarily unavailable, provide an expected return time only if you can reasonably meet it, and give an alternate contact method when appropriate. Avoid publishing database names, server paths, software vulnerabilities, internal ticket numbers, administrator URLs, or other diagnostic details that do not help visitors.

Understand the language-default option

If Use Site Language Default Message is selected instead, Joomla uses the offline text supplied by the active site language rather than the Custom Message field. On a multilingual site, this can be preferable when language packs provide the desired localized text. If you need carefully controlled wording across languages, test each language presentation rather than assuming one custom string will satisfy every visitor.

If your custom message does not appear

Confirm Offline Message is actually set to Use Custom Message, save the configuration, and test anonymously. Then rule out a stale CDN/page cache and template overrides or third-party offline/maintenance extensions. A hosting-provider maintenance page can also replace Joomla's response entirely.

The message does not secure the site

Offline mode is an availability feature, not a substitute for server-level access control. If a staging site or maintenance copy must be private, protect it with appropriate hosting, web-server, reverse-proxy, VPN, or equivalent authentication controls.
