How to Enable Joomla Debug Mode
Joomla's Debug System mode can expose diagnostic information that helps identify extension errors, database-query problems, performance issues, and other application behavior. Because debug output can disclose sensitive technical details, enable it only for a controlled troubleshooting session and plan to disable it again as soon as you have the evidence you need.
Enable Debug System in Global Configuration
- Sign in to Joomla Administrator.
- Open System → Setup Panel → Global Configuration.
- Open the System tab.
- Locate the Debug panel.
- Set Debug System to Yes.
- Select Save or Save & Close.
Joomla's programmer documentation describes this switch as setting Joomla's debug state (JDEBUG) and enabling the debug facilities used by the System - Debug plugin.
Confirm the System - Debug plugin is available
The debug console is provided/configured through Joomla's System - Debug plugin. If Debug System is enabled but the expected console is absent, inspect that plugin's state and settings before assuming Global Configuration failed. Plugin options can also restrict which user groups see the console.
Reproduce the problem deliberately
Open the page or Administrator action that produces the problem and capture only the diagnostic information relevant to it. Depending on configuration, Joomla debugging can help expose queries, timing/profile information, logged messages, language diagnostics, and application errors. Record exact error text and stack information needed for troubleshooting.
Do not expose debug output longer than necessary
Joomla's own Global Configuration help advises against leaving debug mode active on a live website. Debug data can disclose paths, queries, extension names, timing, session-related data, and other internal details. Prefer a staging or development copy when the problem can be reproduced there.
If Administrator is inaccessible
Joomla documentation notes that emergency troubleshooting may require changing the debug setting directly in the root configuration.php when normal Administrator access is unavailable. Make a current backup, edit only the required configuration value, and restore normal settings after diagnosis. File ownership and permissions vary by host, so do not apply broad permission changes blindly.
Debug mode is not the same as Error Reporting
If you need PHP warnings, notices, or other error detail, Joomla's Error Reporting setting may also matter. Enable only the diagnostics needed for the problem. More output is not automatically better, especially on a production system where unrelated warnings can obscure the original failure or disclose unnecessary information.
Turn debug mode back off
After collecting the required evidence, return to System → Setup Panel → Global Configuration → System, set Debug System to No, save, and verify the frontend and Administrator no longer display debug information. Keep the captured evidence with the ticket or development record rather than keeping the live site in debug mode.
