How to Enable Joomla Error Reporting

Joomla's Error Reporting setting controls the PHP error-reporting level used by the site. Temporarily increasing it can reveal warnings and errors that explain a blank page, failed extension, or other malfunction. Because detailed errors can expose sensitive implementation information, enable stronger reporting only for a controlled troubleshooting period.

Enable error reporting in Administrator

  1. Sign in to Joomla Administrator.
  2. Open System → Setup Panel → Global Configuration.
  3. Open the Server tab.
  4. Locate Error Reporting.
  5. Choose the level needed for the investigation. Maximum is the appropriate Joomla option when you deliberately need the broadest available PHP error reporting.
  6. Save the configuration.

Reproduce the problem

Return to the exact page or action that fails and capture the complete error message, file, line, and stack information that Joomla/PHP provides. Do not publish credentials, tokens, database details, filesystem paths, or other sensitive diagnostics in a public forum.

If Administrator cannot load

Official Joomla documentation describes a recovery method using the root configuration.php: setting the configuration's error-reporting value to maximum corresponds to selecting Maximum in Global Configuration. Back up the file first and use direct editing only when the normal Administrator interface is unavailable.

Error reporting is not Debug System

Error Reporting and Debug System are related troubleshooting tools but separate settings. Raising Error Reporting does not require leaving Joomla's full debug mode enabled. Start with the narrowest diagnostic change that answers the question.

Restore the production setting

After collecting the evidence, return Error Reporting to the site's intended production value and verify the public page again. If PHP or the web server suppresses, redirects, or logs errors independently, consult the hosting/server configuration and logs as Joomla cannot override every environment policy.
