How to Fix Incorrect Joomla Log and Temp Paths
Incorrect log and temporary-folder paths commonly appear after a Joomla site is moved or restored to a server with a different filesystem layout. Joomla expects both locations to exist and be writable by PHP, but they serve different purposes and should be corrected independently.
Check the current paths
- Sign in to Joomla Administrator.
- Open System → Setup Panel → Global Configuration.
- On the Server tab, note Path to Temp Folder.
- On the Logging tab, note Path to Log Folder.
Both are server filesystem paths. They are not public URLs. Joomla's current help requires the temporary folder to be writable and states that the log path must be an absolute path writable by PHP.
Correct the temporary path
Set Path to Temp Folder to an existing directory intended for Joomla temporary files. Verify PHP can write there. This location is used for temporary processing and should not be confused with a system-wide temporary directory merely because both contain temporary files.
Correct the log path carefully
Set Path to Log Folder to an existing, PHP-writable directory intended for Joomla logs. Joomla's Global Configuration help warns that a missing or unwritable log path can prevent Joomla from loading, and it advises against a system-wide shared directory such as /tmp for logs.
Save and verify
Select Save, then reopen Global Configuration and confirm both values persisted. Open System → Information Panel → System Information → Folder Permissions for Joomla's writable-directory checks. Test a normal operation that uses temporary storage, and if logging is enabled for a reproducible event, confirm the expected log is written.
Recover if Administrator becomes unavailable
Global Configuration is stored in the site's root configuration.php. If a bad path prevents normal Administrator access, use your hosting file manager or another controlled server-access method to restore the previously working values in that file. Change only the affected configuration values and keep a backup before editing.
Do not mask a permissions problem
If a correct path is still reported unwritable, fix the directory ownership, PHP user access, or hosting configuration. Do not use world-writable permissions as a universal workaround. The correct ownership and permission model depends on the web server, PHP handler, and hosting platform.
