How to Fix Joomla Global Configuration Changes Not Saving

If Joomla Global Configuration appears to accept a change but the old value returns—or Joomla reports that it cannot write the configuration file—the problem is commonly file ownership, permissions, or another hosting-level restriction affecting the root configuration.php.

Confirm the failure first

  1. Open System → Setup Panel → Global Configuration.
  2. Make one small, reversible change.
  3. Select Save.
  4. Record the exact error message, if any.
  5. Reload or reopen Global Configuration and check whether the value persisted.

Joomla's official help says Global Configuration values are saved in [Joomla]/configuration.php. Its troubleshooting documentation specifically describes a failure to write that file as a reason configuration changes do not save.

Check configuration.php without weakening the whole site

Use your hosting control panel, SFTP/SSH access, or provider tools to inspect the root configuration.php. Check its owner and whether the PHP/web-server identity used by this site can perform the write Joomla needs. The correct ownership and permission model depends on the server and PHP handler; do not copy a numeric permission from an unrelated host.

Do not make configuration.php world-writable

Joomla's troubleshooting guidance explicitly warns against making configuration.php writable for everyone as a general solution. Fix the ownership or server access model instead. On shared hosting, ask the provider to correct ownership or explain the PHP execution identity if you cannot safely determine it.

Check for hosting restrictions

If ownership and normal write permissions look correct, check for immutable/read-only filesystem controls, deployment tooling that replaces files, security software, container/read-only mounts, or provider policies that prevent PHP from modifying the file. A site restored under a different account can also retain ownership that no longer matches the running PHP process.

Retest with one setting

After correcting the underlying write problem, return to Global Configuration, make one controlled change, save, reopen the screen, and confirm the value persisted. If the setting affects visible behavior, test that behavior separately.

If Administrator is unavailable

Do not keep changing permissions blindly. Restore a known-good configuration.php from backup or use controlled server access to correct only the necessary value or filesystem condition. Take a copy before manual editing so you can recover from a syntax mistake.
