How to Put a Joomla Website Offline

Joomla includes a built-in Site Offline switch that replaces the normal public frontend with an offline page while allowing Administrator access to continue. It is useful for maintenance and temporary public unavailability. It is not a hardened privacy boundary for a sensitive staging site; use server-level authentication or equivalent access control when the entire site must be protected.

Put the site offline

  1. Sign in to Joomla Administrator.
  2. Open System → Setup Panel → Global Configuration.
  3. On the Site tab, set Site Offline to Yes.
  4. Choose the desired Offline Message behavior. If you choose a custom message, enter the visitor-facing text.
  5. Optionally select an Offline Image.
  6. Select Save or Save & Close.

Verify as an ordinary visitor

Open the frontend in a private/incognito window where you are not authenticated. The normal public site should be replaced by Joomla's offline presentation. Testing anonymously matters because users with appropriate offline-access permissions can see the frontend differently from ordinary visitors.

Administrator remains available

Joomla's Site Offline switch applies to frontend availability; it does not shut down the Administrator application. Continue maintenance through /administrator. If Administrator is also unavailable, investigate the actual error, server access rules, extension behavior, or hosting state rather than treating that as normal offline-mode behavior.

Control who can access the offline frontend

Joomla ACL includes an Offline Access permission. Privileged users can therefore be allowed to access the frontend while the public receives the offline page. Test with the exact user group involved rather than a Super User, because Super Users are not representative of ordinary ACL behavior.

When Site Offline is not enough

If a staging or development site contains confidential material or must not be reachable by unauthorized users, protect it at the web-server, hosting, reverse-proxy, VPN, or other access-control layer. Joomla's offline page is primarily a site-availability feature and can intentionally permit authenticated access.

Bring the site back online safely

  1. Complete maintenance and test the site with appropriate privileged access.
  2. Return to Global Configuration.
  3. Set Site Offline to No and save.
  4. Open the frontend anonymously and test the home page plus representative internal URLs.
  5. If a CDN, reverse proxy, or page cache is present, confirm visitors are not receiving a stale offline page.

If the offline setting will not save

Global Configuration is stored primarily in the Joomla root configuration.php. If Joomla reports that it cannot save configuration, correct the specific ownership/writability problem. Do not make the entire installation broadly writable as a workaround.
