How to Back Up a Joomla Website
Back up both halves of the site
A complete Joomla backup needs the website files and the database. The files contain Joomla core, extensions, templates, media, configuration.php, and other filesystem data; the database contains articles, users, menus, extension data, configuration records, and other structured content. Backing up only one half leaves the site incomplete.
Choose a consistent backup point
For a busy site, reduce changes while the backup is being created. Joomla's backup guidance describes taking the site offline while copying files and database so the two parts represent the same point in time. For low-change sites or snapshot-capable hosting, use the consistency method supported by the platform.
Copy the complete Joomla filesystem
Archive or copy the Joomla document root, including hidden files such as .htaccess when present, configuration.php, media, templates, plugins, components, modules, libraries, and other installed files. A hosting file manager can often create one archive more reliably than transferring thousands of individual files.
Export the Joomla database
Export the entire database identified by the Joomla configuration. Joomla documentation supports phpMyAdmin, command-line database tools, and Joomla's CLI database exporter in supported environments. Make sure the export includes all Joomla tables, including tables added by extensions.
Move the backup away from the live server
A backup stored only beside the production site can be lost in the same disk failure, account compromise, accidental deletion, or hosting incident. Copy completed backups to a separate protected location. Encrypt or otherwise protect backups when they contain personal data, credentials, or other sensitive information.
Record enough information to restore it
Keep the backup date, Joomla version, PHP/database environment where relevant, archive and database filenames, and any special restore notes. Do not store live passwords in ordinary notes. If a third-party backup extension is used, retain the matching restoration instructions and any required restoration utility.
Verify the backup instead of trusting its existence
Check that the archive opens, expected directories and configuration.php are present, and the database export is nonempty and contains expected Joomla tables. The strongest verification is a controlled restore to a separate environment. A backup is useful only when its contents can actually be restored.
