How to Back Up Joomla Before a Core Update
Use a current backup, not an old routine copy
Create a fresh recovery point immediately before the Joomla core update. Joomla's update documentation tells administrators to back up before updating, and current Joomla Update options can present a confirmation that a backup has been taken before the update is applied.
Back up both database and files
Preserve the complete Joomla database and filesystem. The database contains content, users, extension data, and configuration values; the filesystem contains Joomla core, extensions, templates, media, and configuration.php. A complete rollback requires a compatible set of both.
Store the backup outside the update path
Do not rely on an archive that exists only in a temporary or publicly accessible directory inside the Joomla installation. Copy the recovery set to protected storage where the update process, a server failure, or a site compromise cannot easily destroy it.
Review Joomla's pre-update information
Open the Joomla Update component and review the Pre-Update Check, technical requirements, and extension compatibility information for the target release. Resolve required environment problems and investigate potentially incompatible third-party extensions before starting the update.
Record the starting environment
Note the current Joomla version, target version, PHP and database versions, important extension versions, and backup timestamp. If the update is part of a larger migration, separate the core update from unrelated server or extension changes when practical so failures are easier to diagnose.
Verify the backup before clicking update
Confirm the expected database dump and site files are present, readable, and non-trivial in size. For high-value sites, use a backup method that has already been restoration-tested. Knowing that an archive was created is weaker evidence than knowing the recovery process works.
Keep the backup through post-update testing
After Joomla reports success, verify Administrator and frontend access, database status, extensions, templates, forms, login, scheduled tasks, and important integrations. Retain the pre-update backup until the site is stable and newer verified backups have been created.
