How to Back Up Joomla Before Installing an Extension

Create the backup before uploading the package

Take the recovery point before the extension installer changes files or database tables. Joomla's security checklist explicitly recommends backing up the site's files and database before installing extensions. Do not wait until an installation has failed to discover that the previous working state was not preserved.

Back up the Joomla database

Export the complete database used by the Joomla installation with a trusted backup tool, hosting system, database administration tool, or supported command-line process. Record the database name and backup time. Confirm the export is non-empty and completes without an error.

Back up the site files

Preserve the Joomla filesystem, including configuration.php, installed extensions and templates, media, and site-specific files. A database export alone cannot restore files an installer adds, replaces, or removes. If the host provides a snapshot, understand exactly which filesystem and database resources that snapshot includes.

Store the recovery copy safely

Keep the backup somewhere the extension installation cannot overwrite or delete it. Prefer protected off-site or account-independent storage for an important production site. Avoid leaving downloadable backup archives under the public web root.

Record the known-good state

Note the Joomla version, PHP version, extension version being installed, and the time the backup completed. For a production site, also record any special configuration or deployment steps needed for recovery. This makes it much easier to choose the correct recovery point if the installation causes problems.

Review the extension before installing

Obtain the package from a source you trust and confirm it supports the Joomla and PHP versions in use. Review the developer's installation and upgrade instructions. A backup provides a recovery path; it does not make an incompatible or untrusted extension safe to install.

Install and test before discarding the backup

After installation, test Administrator access, the frontend, the extension's main workflows, forms, scheduled tasks, and any affected integrations. Review logs for new errors. Retain the pre-install backup until the extension is proven stable and you have newer verified recovery points.
