How to Back Up Joomla Before Updating an Extension
Treat an extension update as a change that needs rollback
Extension updates can replace files, alter database schema, change configuration, or modify integrations. Joomla documentation recommends backing up the installation files and database before updating extensions so the previous state can be restored if the update fails or produces unexpected results.
Capture the database immediately before the update
Create a fresh database export or application backup close to the update window. This is especially important for sites receiving orders, registrations, form submissions, or other writes because an older backup can require you to choose between restoring functionality and preserving newer data.
Capture the Joomla filesystem
Back up the site files as well as the database. Include configuration.php, the extension's files, templates and overrides, media, and other site-specific assets. A filesystem backup gives you a reference for files the update replaces and supports a complete rollback when the database and code must stay synchronized.
Record the versions involved
Write down the current extension version, target version, Joomla version, PHP version, and backup timestamp. Read the extension developer's changelog and update instructions for prerequisites, migrations, breaking changes, or intermediate-version requirements before clicking Update.
Check compatibility and dependent extensions
Confirm the new extension release supports the installed Joomla and PHP versions and review any related plugins, modules, libraries, templates, or integrations. An update can succeed technically while breaking an add-on that depends on older APIs or markup.
Perform the update and verify the result
Use Joomla's supported extension-update process or the vendor's documented method. Afterward, test both Administrator and frontend functionality, clear only relevant caches, and inspect Joomla, PHP, and browser logs for new failures. Confirm the reported extension version matches the intended release.
Retain the pre-update recovery point until stable
Do not immediately delete the backup after seeing a success message. Keep it until the site's important workflows have been exercised and any background jobs have run. If rollback becomes necessary, follow the extension developer's recovery guidance because restoring old files without the matching database can create a mismatched installation.
