How to Change Joomla Database Settings After Moving a Site
Collect the destination database values first
Before editing Joomla, confirm the database server hostname, database name, username, password, database type, and the table prefix used by the imported Joomla tables. Hosting providers do not always use localhost for the database host, and a migrated database can have a different name or account even when the Joomla files are unchanged.
Back up configuration.php before editing
The database connection settings are stored in configuration.php in the Joomla site root. Download or copy the existing file before changing it and protect both copies from public exposure. Use a plain-text editor that preserves PHP syntax; an accidental quote, semicolon, or encoding change can prevent Joomla from loading.
Update the database connection properties
Set the configuration values for host, user, password, and database to the destination credentials. Confirm the configured database type remains appropriate for the database engine you actually restored. Joomla's copying documentation specifically calls out the database host, username, database name, and password as values that commonly need adjustment on a new server.
Confirm the table prefix matches the imported tables
Check Joomla's configured dbprefix against the actual table names in the destination database. The prefix is the characters before Joomla table names, such as a generated string followed by an underscore. A correct database login with the wrong prefix can make Joomla behave as though required tables are missing.
Review log and temporary paths at the same time
A server move can change absolute filesystem paths even though those settings are not database credentials. Joomla's copying documentation notes that incorrect log_path or tmp_path values can make those directories unwritable and interfere with extension installation or temporary operations. Update them to valid staging or production paths as appropriate.
Test the connection without changing unrelated settings
Load the frontend and Administrator after saving configuration.php. If Joomla reports a database connection error, recheck the host, credentials, database name, user privileges, and whether the database service accepts connections from the web server. Avoid changing multiple unrelated Joomla options until the connection itself is known to work.
Verify the migrated data and secure the configuration
After Joomla connects, inspect users, articles, menus, extensions, and recent records to confirm you reached the intended database rather than another valid database on the account. Restore the host's normal ownership and permissions for configuration.php and remove temporary copies from public directories when troubleshooting is finished.
