How to Fix Database Connection Errors After Migrating Joomla
Database connection errors after moving Joomla usually come from destination credentials, host access, privileges, or a mismatched table prefix. Verify the imported database and configuration systematically before changing Joomla or reinstalling anything.
Capture the exact database failure
Record the complete error and whether both frontend and Administrator fail. Do not reinstall Joomla over the migrated site. An authentication or connection error is different from an SQL error that occurs after Joomla has already connected, so diagnose the stage of failure first.
Verify configuration.php against the destination
Compare the destination database host, database name, username, password, database driver, and table prefix with configuration.php. Do not assume localhost is correct; managed database services often use a separate hostname. Keep a protected backup of configuration.php before editing and never expose credentials in a public diagnostic file.
Confirm the database import and table prefix
Open the destination database in phpMyAdmin or another trusted client. Verify expected Joomla tables and recent records exist, and confirm the configured prefix exactly matches those tables. A successful connection to an empty or wrong database can look like an application failure even though authentication worked.
Check user privileges and network access
Confirm the configured database user is assigned to the intended database with the privileges Joomla requires. If the database is remote, verify firewall, allowlist, TLS, or provider network rules permit connections from the web server. Test connectivity from the same hosting environment when possible.
Check platform compatibility without changing engines
Confirm the destination database server and PHP versions meet the requirements for the installed Joomla release. Do not switch database engine families or downgrade server software as an improvised migration fix. If the connection succeeds but schema errors remain, use Joomla System → Maintenance → Database for core schema checks appropriate to that installed version.
Verify the intended data after Joomla loads
Once the site connects, inspect known recent articles, users, menus, and extension data to prove Joomla is using the intended imported database. Test frontend and Administrator, review logs for remaining SQL errors, restore secure permissions on configuration.php, and create a fresh destination backup after validation.
