How to Move Joomla from a Subdirectory to the Domain Root

Back up the current Joomla installation

Create a current backup of both files and database before changing the document location. Record the working subdirectory URL and server path. If the site receives frequent writes, plan a short maintenance window so content does not diverge while files are moved.

Confirm the domain root is ready

Identify the actual document root for the domain and inspect it before copying Joomla there. Remove or archive conflicting index files and old applications only after backing them up. Do not assume public_html is always the correct root; addon domains and modern hosting layouts can use domain-specific directories.

Move the complete Joomla file tree

Move or copy all Joomla files and directories from the subdirectory into the domain root, including hidden files such as .htaccess when they are part of the working configuration. Preserve structure and correct ownership. Do not leave a second active copy that can receive traffic or create confusing relative paths.

Review configuration.php filesystem paths

If the server filesystem location changed, update the configured log and temporary paths to valid writable destinations. Joomla path values are filesystem paths, not browser URLs. Database credentials usually remain unchanged when only the document directory moves, but verify them rather than assuming.

Remove subdirectory assumptions from rewrites and custom code

Review .htaccess, Nginx or IIS rules, template code, custom scripts, extension settings, asset paths, and integrations for the old subdirectory. If Apache RewriteBase was customized for the old path, adjust or remove it according to the new server configuration.

Redirect the old public paths

Map requests from the former /subdirectory/... URLs to the equivalent root URLs where content still exists. Use direct permanent redirects rather than chains. Test old bookmarks, search results, images, downloads, and extension routes so visitors do not land on avoidable 404 pages.

Test the root installation thoroughly

Verify the home page, Administrator, SEF routing, media, forms, login, modules, scheduled jobs, and extension-specific views. Inspect browser and server logs for requests that still contain the old subdirectory. Once the root copy is stable, remove or secure the obsolete source directory.
