How to Restore a Joomla Database Manually
Preserve the current database before importing anything
Export or snapshot the current database even when it is damaged. A restore is destructive and can remove orders, users, form submissions, content, configuration, or extension data created after the backup. Keep the original backup dump unchanged and perform the first import into a new database when practical so rollback remains possible.
Match the database backup to the Joomla files
Use a SQL dump from the same recovery point as the Joomla filesystem whenever possible. Joomla core and extensions can change database schemas during updates. Restoring an older database beneath newer files can leave code expecting columns or data that do not exist, while an older codebase can be incompatible with a newer schema.
Create a compatible destination database
Create an empty database with the character set and collation appropriate for the site and a database user with the permissions Joomla needs. Use a MySQL, MariaDB, or PostgreSQL version supported by the Joomla version you are restoring. Do not casually migrate between database engine types as part of disaster recovery; Joomla's support policy does not treat cross-engine migration as a supported downgrade path.
Import the SQL dump with an appropriate tool
Use the hosting database manager, command-line database client, or another trusted database administration tool to import the complete dump. Large databases may exceed browser upload or execution limits, in which case a command-line or host-assisted import is safer. Watch the import output and stop on SQL errors rather than assuming a partial import is usable.
Update configuration.php to point to the restored database
Confirm the database type, host, username, password, database name, and table prefix match the imported tables. A correct import can still produce a database connection error when configuration.php points to another database or uses old hosting credentials. Protect the configuration file and avoid changing unrelated Joomla settings during recovery.
Use Joomla's database check after access is restored
In Administrator, open System → Information Panel → Database. Joomla documents this screen as a check that database table structure matches the installed Joomla program files. If an update was interrupted, Update Structure can run outstanding Joomla schema scripts. Use it only after confirming the restored files represent the Joomla version you intend to run.
Validate application data before returning to production
Check Administrator login, users, articles, menus, modules, extensions, forms, commerce or membership data, and any business-critical records. Compare record counts or recent entries with expectations. Once the restored database and files are verified together, take a new complete backup before applying updates or reopening write-heavy site functions.
