What Should a Complete Joomla Backup Include?

Include the Joomla database

The database is one of the two essential parts of a Joomla backup. It contains site content and much of Joomla's configuration and extension data. Export the complete database used by the site, not just the core-looking tables, because third-party extensions normally create and depend on their own tables.

Include the entire Joomla file tree

Back up the Joomla root and its files and directories, including Administrator, components, modules, plugins, templates, libraries, media, images, language files, and other installed application data. Preserve the directory structure so files can be restored to the correct locations.

Preserve configuration and server-control files

Include configuration.php and applicable hidden files such as .htaccess. These can contain site-specific database, path, mail, caching, SEF, and server behavior settings. Protect the backup because configuration.php can contain database credentials and other operational information.

Include site-specific uploads and customizations

Media, uploaded documents, custom template files, user.css or user.js, template overrides, custom plugins, and locally developed extensions may not exist in a fresh Joomla download. Confirm that these unique assets are inside the filesystem backup rather than assuming they can be reconstructed later.

Decide how to handle cache, logs, and temporary data

A filesystem archive may contain cache, logs, and temporary files, but not all of them are necessary for a normal restore. If your backup process excludes disposable data, document those exclusions. Preserve logs separately when they are needed for security, compliance, or incident investigation.

Keep restoration context with the backup

Record the backup time, Joomla release, relevant PHP/database requirements, and the tool or method used to create the archive and database export. If a backup extension produces a proprietary archive, keep the compatible restoration procedure available instead of assuming any ZIP extractor can restore it.

Store and test the complete set together

Treat the file archive and database export as one recovery set when they were created from the same site state. Store protected copies away from production and periodically restore a set to a test location. Joomla's own backup documentation is explicit that a backup without both files and database is incomplete.
