How Joomla Database Table Prefixes Work
What a Joomla table prefix is
A table prefix is a short string prepended to Joomla database table names. A site using abcd_ will have names such as abcd_content and abcd_users.
Why Joomla uses a prefix
The prefix namespaces a site's tables inside the database and can allow more than one Joomla table set to coexist when each installation has a different prefix.
How #__ works
Extension developers use #__ as a portable placeholder for the real prefix. Joomla replaces #__ with the configured prefix when its database or installer layer processes the SQL, allowing one package to work across differently prefixed sites.
Why copied SQL may need editing
If instructions show #__users or #__content and you paste SQL directly into a generic database client, confirm whether #__ must be replaced with the real prefix. The database server itself does not know Joomla's placeholder convention.
Where to find the prefix
The configured value is $dbprefix in configuration.php. Compare it with actual table names in the configured database before direct queries.
Why changing it is a migration task
Changing only $dbprefix does not rename existing tables and can make Joomla unable to find them. A legitimate prefix change requires coordinated table and configuration changes, a backup, and a maintenance window.
Use prefixes as an identification check
Verify the database name and prefix together before troubleshooting. The expected prefix helps identify the intended table set, but it is not permission to modify unfamiliar tables without understanding them.
