How to Back Up a Joomla Database Before Running SQL

Identify the database Joomla actually uses

Open the Joomla installation's configuration.php and confirm the configured database name. Also note the table prefix so you can verify that the selected database contains the expected Joomla tables. Hosting accounts often contain staging, development, or abandoned databases alongside production.

Open the correct database in phpMyAdmin

Use the database-management tool supplied by your hosting provider and select the exact database from Joomla's configuration. Joomla documentation recommends checking recognizable site data before exporting when you need confidence that you selected the right database.

Export the database before making changes

In phpMyAdmin, use the Export function to create an SQL export of the selected Joomla database. Save the resulting file somewhere secure and outside the live site's public web directories. Hosting interfaces vary, so follow the provider's backup tooling when it offers a more appropriate database snapshot or backup system.

Keep the backup tied to the change

Name or document the export with the site, date, and purpose so you know it is the recovery point from immediately before the SQL operation. For important production work, confirm the backup file exists and has a plausible nonzero size before proceeding.

Know what a database-only backup does not contain

A database export protects Joomla data and database structure, but it does not contain the site's PHP files, media, extension packages, templates, or configuration file. If the planned work also changes files or follows a failed software update, create a complete site backup as well.

Protect the backup as sensitive data

A Joomla database can contain user information, email addresses, configuration data, extension data, session-related information, and password hashes. Store exports in a protected location, restrict access, and remove temporary copies from public or shared locations when they are no longer needed.

Make sure restoration is possible

A backup is most useful when you know how it will be restored. Confirm that your hosting provider or database tool supports importing the export and that you have sufficient access to do so. For high-risk work, test the restore process on staging rather than discovering after a failure that the backup cannot be used.
