How to Check Joomla Database Table Structure
Use Joomla's Database check first
In Joomla Administrator, open System and choose Database from the Information panel. This screen compares the database schema state with the Joomla program files and reports structure problems that can remain after an incomplete or manual update. On a healthy site, Joomla reports that the database table structure is up to date.
Understand what the check is measuring
Joomla core updates can include SQL schema changes as well as PHP and other files. During a normal Joomla update, those database changes are applied automatically. If an update fails partway through, or files are replaced manually, the code and database schema can fall out of sync. The Database screen is designed to detect that type of mismatch.
Review reported problems before changing anything
Read the Database screen before using a repair action. Note which schema changes Joomla says are missing and whether the problem appeared after a core update. If the screen is unexpectedly empty while a pre-update check says the structure is out of date, investigate the Joomla schema tracking state rather than inventing table changes.
Inspect a table directly when deeper diagnosis is needed
For advanced troubleshooting, use phpMyAdmin or another database client to inspect a table's Structure view. Confirm the database name and Joomla table prefix first. Compare columns, types, indexes, defaults, and other properties only against the schema for the exact Joomla version you are running; old table diagrams can be misleading.
Use Joomla's shipped update SQL as the version-specific reference
Joomla's core database update scripts are stored under administrator/components/com_admin/sql/updates for the relevant database driver. Those scripts document schema changes expected across Joomla versions. They are a better reference for a current installation than a generic list copied from an older Joomla release.
Back up before a structure repair
A structure check is normally read-only, but repairing or manually altering tables is not. Take a current database backup before using direct ALTER, CREATE, DROP, or other schema-changing SQL. If you are recovering from a failed Joomla update, a complete files-and-database backup is safer.
Recheck after any supported repair
After using Joomla's Update Structure action or another documented recovery procedure, return to the Database screen and verify that Joomla reports the structure as up to date. Then test Administrator and frontend functions affected by the original problem and review the error logs before continuing with more updates.
