How to Check Whether a Joomla ID Column Is Missing AUTO_INCREMENT
Identify the exact table first
Start with the database error or affected Joomla function and identify the exact table. Confirm the Joomla database name and table prefix before inspecting it. Do not assume every table with an id column is supposed to use AUTO_INCREMENT; verify the expected schema for that specific Joomla core or extension table.
Check the column in phpMyAdmin
Open the correct database, select the table, and choose Structure. Find the id column and inspect its Extra attribute. On a MySQL or MariaDB table designed with automatic integer IDs, Extra should normally show auto_increment. Also record the column type and whether it is indexed as the primary key.
Use INFORMATION_SCHEMA for a read-only check
On MySQL or MariaDB, INFORMATION_SCHEMA.COLUMNS can report the column definition without altering it. Filter by the exact database, table, and column and inspect COLUMN_TYPE, IS_NULLABLE, COLUMN_DEFAULT, COLUMN_KEY, and EXTRA. If EXTRA is blank where the authoritative schema requires auto_increment, the property is missing.
Compare with the authoritative Joomla schema
For Joomla core tables, compare the result with the SQL schema/update files shipped with the exact Joomla release. For extension tables, compare it with the extension's install and update SQL. Joomla's programmer documentation shows components commonly declaring an integer id as NOT NULL AUTO_INCREMENT and PRIMARY KEY, but that example is a pattern, not a rule for every table.
Check the primary key and existing values too
AUTO_INCREMENT normally works with an indexed integer column, and the table's current IDs matter when repairing it. Look for duplicate IDs, a missing primary key, unexpected zero values, or a column type that differs from the expected definition. A missing AUTO_INCREMENT flag may be only one part of a damaged schema.
Do not repair during the diagnostic step
Checking INFORMATION_SCHEMA or phpMyAdmin Structure is read-only; changing the column is not. Save the observed definition, take a database backup, and determine the exact expected definition before issuing ALTER TABLE or using a repair tool.
Use the result to choose the repair path
If a Joomla core table differs from the shipped schema, try Joomla's supported Database/Update Structure workflow when applicable. If an extension table differs, use the extension developer's supported repair or exact schema. Only perform a manual column alteration when the expected structure is certain and a rollback is available.
