How to Find Joomla SQL Update Files
Know which SQL update files you are looking for
Joomla can use SQL update files for the core CMS and for extensions. For a third-party extension, the extension manifest is the best starting point because its update section can declare a schemas path for each supported database driver. Do not assume every extension stores SQL in the same physical location.
Check an extension's manifest
Open the installed extension's XML manifest and find the update section. A component can declare a schemapath such as sql/updates/mysql. Joomla Programmer Documentation notes that, by convention, component SQL is commonly stored under an sql folder within the Administrator portion of the package, but the manifest is the contract for the actual package.
Follow the declared schemas path
Navigate from the extension's installed files to the directory declared for the site's database driver. You should see numbered .sql files when the extension uses Joomla's schema-update mechanism. The filenames represent SQL schema versions and are ordered numerically by Joomla rather than simply alphabetically.
Use the exact installed package when files are unclear
If the installed directory appears incomplete, compare it with a clean copy of the exact extension package you installed. Do not borrow SQL files from a newer or older release. A mismatched migration file can alter tables or data in ways the installed PHP code does not expect.
Recognize the #__ table placeholder
Joomla extension SQL normally uses #__ at the beginning of Joomla table names. Joomla replaces that placeholder with the site's configured database prefix when its installer processes the SQL. If you inspect a file manually, seeing #__example does not mean a literal table with that name should exist.
Do not execute an update file merely because you found it
Joomla tracks the last processed extension SQL version in #__schemas and uses that state to determine which later files need to run during an update. Installer scripts can also contain PHP migration logic. Finding a SQL file is therefore a diagnostic step, not permission to run it manually.
Record the path and version sequence
For troubleshooting, record the extension element, installed manifest version, schemas path, database driver, SQL filenames, and the extension's #__schemas version_id. Those facts make it possible to determine which migrations Joomla considers processed and which may still be pending.
