How to Find Your Joomla Database Table Prefix

Joomla's database table prefix is the short string added to the beginning of the tables that belong to a Joomla installation. You need the exact prefix before running direct SQL, checking tables in phpMyAdmin, or following instructions that use Joomla's jossa_ placeholder. Read it from the configuration for the exact site you are working on rather than assuming a common value such as jos_.

Read the prefix from configuration.php

  1. Identify the document root for the Joomla site you are troubleshooting.
  2. Open that site's configuration.php with your hosting file manager, SFTP, SSH, or another secure file-access method.
  3. Find the $dbprefix property.
  4. Copy only its value; do not edit the file merely to inspect it.

A typical setting looks like:

public $dbprefix = 'abcd_';

In this example, abcd_ is the prefix. Joomla installations can use different generated or administrator-selected prefixes, so do not substitute jos_ from old examples.

Confirm the prefix against the configured database

Read Joomla's $db setting from the same configuration.php, then open that database in phpMyAdmin or the database tool supplied by your host. You should see many tables beginning with the configured prefix, for example:

abcd_content
abcd_extensions
abcd_menu
abcd_users

If the expected prefixed tables are absent, stop before running SQL. You may be viewing the wrong database, the wrong Joomla copy, or a configuration that no longer matches the database.

Understand Joomla's jossa_ placeholder

Joomla extension code and installation SQL commonly use jossa_ in table names. Joomla's database/installer layer replaces that placeholder with the site's configured prefix. For example, Joomla can turn jossa_content into abcd_content for a site whose prefix is abcd_.

A generic SQL client such as phpMyAdmin does not automatically know Joomla's placeholder convention. When instructions tell you to run SQL manually, replace jossa_ with the verified real prefix unless the specific tool or procedure explicitly performs that substitution for you.

Protect configuration.php while troubleshooting

The same file contains database credentials and other private configuration. If you need help, share the prefix value—not the entire unredacted file. Redact the database password and any other secrets from screenshots or copied configuration.

The prefix is useful for identifying a site's table set, but it is not a security boundary and does not make unfamiliar tables safe to modify. Establish the owner and purpose of a table before changing it.

Verify the target before direct SQL work

Before any write operation, confirm the hostname/site copy, database name, and prefix together. Take a current database backup and preview the rows a statement will affect with a read-only SELECT when practical.

Do not change only $dbprefix as a troubleshooting shortcut. That makes Joomla look for a different set of table names. A legitimate prefix change is a coordinated database migration involving the tables and Joomla configuration, followed by full verification.
