How to Fix Joomla Database Connection Errors

Capture the exact connection failure

Record the full Joomla or PHP error, affected URL, and time. A connection refusal, authentication failure, unknown database, TLS error, and timeout can all appear to users as a database problem but require different fixes. Check the PHP, web-server, and database-server logs when available.

Verify Joomla’s configured connection values

Check the site’s database host, database name, database username, password, database type/driver, and table prefix in the active Joomla configuration. Compare them with the hosting control panel or database service. Do not publish the password in screenshots or support tickets.

Test the database account independently

Use the host’s database tool or a command-line client, when available, to test the same host, database, username, and authentication method. If the account cannot connect outside Joomla either, correct the database service, credentials, account host restrictions, or permissions before changing Joomla code.

Check hostnames, ports, and network access

The database host is not always localhost. Managed hosting may use a separate hostname or network endpoint, and firewalls can restrict which web servers may connect. Confirm the host-provided endpoint and any nondefault port, private-network requirement, or allowlist. Avoid guessing an IP address that the provider has not documented.

Confirm the server and PHP driver are supported

Verify that the Joomla release supports the database server version and that PHP has the required database driver. Current Joomla 6 documentation supports MySQL, MariaDB, and PostgreSQL within specified version ranges and requires an appropriate PHP database module such as mysqlnd, pdo_mysql, or pdo_pgsql.

Retest without hiding the root cause

After correcting the connection, load Administrator and the frontend and test a database-writing action such as saving a noncritical item. Review logs again. Do not solve a connection incident by granting the Joomla database user unnecessary global privileges; use only the permissions required for the site and its supported update operations.
