How to Identify Joomla Core Database Tables
Start with the verified prefix
Find $dbprefix in configuration.php and select the configured database. Core Joomla tables use that prefix just as extension tables do.
Do not rely on an old table list
Joomla's core schema changes over time. New releases can add, remove, or alter tables, so the installed Joomla release and its shipped schema/update files are stronger evidence than a historical internet list.
Recognize common core areas
Core installations include prefixed tables supporting content, categories, users, assets, menus, modules, extensions, schemas, tags, associations, workflows, and other CMS services. A familiar name helps orientation but is not proof that a table is safe to edit.
Use the shipped Joomla SQL as the reference
For advanced verification, compare the schema with SQL definitions and update scripts shipped with the exact Joomla release. This is safer than reconstructing a table from memory.
Distinguish extension-owned tables
Third-party extensions commonly create their own prefixed tables. Review an extension manifest and its install/update SQL to establish ownership. Never delete an unfamiliar table merely because it is absent from a short core list.
Use Joomla maintenance for core schema issues
When checking whether the core database structure is current, use System → Maintenance → Database and the supported Update Structure action where appropriate rather than inventing ALTER statements.
Document before changing anything
Record the table name and structure, take a backup, and establish its owner and expected schema before modifying it. Base repairs on the installed Joomla version or responsible extension, not naming guesses.
