How to Move Joomla to a Different Database

Record the current database host, name, username, server type, and Joomla table prefix. Create a complete backup before starting. If visitors can create accounts, orders, forms, or other data, use a maintenance window or another migration plan that prevents writes to the source while the final copy is being made.

Create the destination database and account

Create an empty destination database and a database user with the privileges Joomla needs. If the database is on another server, obtain the correct hostname and confirm that the Joomla web server is allowed to connect to it. Check that the destination database platform and version are supported by the Joomla version you are running.

Export the source database

Export the entire Joomla database using phpMyAdmin, the hosting backup system, or an appropriate database command-line tool. Preserve the original export unchanged as a recovery copy. Make sure the export includes all Joomla and extension tables that belong to the site.

Import and verify the destination

Import the export into the new database and review the import result for errors. Confirm the expected Joomla tables exist, the table prefix matches the source, and representative recent data is present. Do not assume a successful file upload means every SQL statement in a large import completed.

Point Joomla to the new database

Edit configuration.php so the database host, username, password, and database name reference the destination. Keep the existing table prefix when the imported tables retain their original names. Changing the database server does not by itself require renaming Joomla tables.

Test before retiring the source

Load the frontend and Administrator, sign in, browse content, and save a noncritical item. Test extensions that perform important writes and review logs for connection or SQL errors. Keep the old database and migration backup until normal operation is proven; only then remove obsolete credentials or old copies according to your retention policy.
