How to Troubleshoot Joomla Database Character Set and Collation Problems
Identify the actual symptom first
Character-set and collation problems can appear as garbled accented characters, question marks, failed inserts, illegal-mix-of-collations errors, sorting differences, or problems storing four-byte characters such as some emoji. Capture the exact database error and identify the affected table and column before changing anything.
Check the database server and Joomla environment
Use Joomla System Information and your database administration tool to identify the database server and version. Joomla supports multiple database platforms, so MySQL or MariaDB character-set commands must not be applied blindly to PostgreSQL. Use diagnostics appropriate to the server actually running the site.
Inspect database, table, and column definitions
On MySQL or MariaDB, inspect the database default plus the character set and collation of the affected tables and text columns. Mixed definitions can be intentional, but unexplained differences between related columns can cause comparison or join errors. Record the current definitions before attempting conversion.
Distinguish storage encoding from already-corrupted text
Changing a table or column character set does not automatically repair text that was previously imported or decoded with the wrong encoding. If stored characters are already corrupted, preserve a backup and determine the original encoding and transformation path before attempting data conversion.
Compare with the exact Joomla or extension schema
For core tables, use the schema and update SQL shipped with the exact Joomla version as the version-specific reference. For third-party tables, use the responsible extension's package and vendor documentation. Do not normalize every table to a setting copied from an unrelated or older Joomla tutorial.
Back up before ALTER or conversion operations
Character-set and collation conversions can rewrite table data and indexes. Take a current database backup before ALTER TABLE, column conversion, dump-and-reimport, or other write operations. Test large or business-critical conversions on a staging copy first.
Verify data and application behavior afterward
After a supported correction, test existing multilingual content, new saves, searches, sorting, extension workflows, and any characters that previously failed. Recheck the affected schema definitions and logs. If text changed unexpectedly, stop further conversions and restore or diagnose from the backup.
