How to Use Joomla Update Structure to Repair the Database Schema

Open Joomla's Database information screen

Sign in to Joomla Administrator, open System, and select Database from the Information panel. This screen checks whether the Joomla database table structure is synchronized with the installed Joomla program files.

Back up the database first

Update Structure can execute pending database schema changes. Create a current database backup before running it, particularly after a failed or interrupted core update. Preserve a full site backup when the files may also be in an uncertain update state.

Review the reported schema problems

Read the entries Joomla displays before applying the repair. This gives you a record of what Joomla believes is missing or inconsistent and helps distinguish a normal pending migration from a more unusual database problem.

Run Update Structure

Choose Update Structure from the Database screen. Joomla attempts to run database schema change scripts in administrator/components/com_admin/sql/updates that were not run during the Joomla version update. It then checks the database state again.

Look for the successful result

When the operation succeeds, Joomla reports that the database table structure is up to date. If errors remain, capture the exact message rather than immediately attempting manual ALTER statements. The failed SQL or database error usually provides the best clue to the next diagnostic step.

Know what Update Structure does not do

Update Structure is for synchronizing Joomla's expected schema changes. It does not restore missing application data, reverse a bad content edit, replace missing Joomla files, or serve as a general-purpose storage-engine repair. Those conditions require their own recovery procedures.

Test Joomla after the repair

Load the frontend and Administrator, save a noncritical item, and test the function that exposed the database problem. Review Joomla, PHP, and database logs where available. If this repair followed a failed core update, verify the Joomla version and update status before attempting the update again.
