How to Change the Joomla From Email Address

Choose an address your mail system permits

The From Email is the default sender address Joomla places on outgoing mail, but the mail provider ultimately decides whether that identity is authorized. Before changing it, confirm that the address or domain is valid for your SMTP account, hosting mail service, relay, or local mail server.

Open Joomla's Mail Settings

In Administrator, go to System → Global Configuration → Server and locate Mail Settings. Find the From Email field. Current Joomla documentation describes this as the email address used to send site email. Record the existing value before changing it so you can restore the known configuration if testing fails.

Enter the new sender address and save

Replace From Email with the approved address and save Global Configuration. Use a real mailbox or provider-authorized sender appropriate for the site's notifications. Avoid arbitrary addresses on domains you do not control; modern mail systems commonly enforce sender authorization and domain authentication.

Keep SMTP authentication and sender policy aligned

When Joomla uses SMTP, the SMTP Username and From Email are separate settings. Some providers allow aliases or delegated Send As identities, while others require the From address to match the authenticated mailbox. Configure any alias or sender permission at the mail provider before expecting Joomla to use it successfully.

Review SPF, DKIM, and DMARC for the sending domain

Changing the visible sender can change which domain's authentication and alignment matter to receiving systems. Confirm that the mail provider is authorized to send for the domain and that the domain's SPF, DKIM, and DMARC design matches the service. These DNS controls are configured outside Joomla.

Send a test and inspect the received message

Use Send Test Mail after saving. Confirm not only that the message arrives, but also that the visible From address is correct and that the message headers show the expected sending service and authentication results. If the provider rewrites the sender, investigate its sender or alias policy.

Check extensions that override the global sender

Some extensions can specify their own From or Reply-To address instead of relying entirely on Global Configuration. After the Joomla test succeeds, trigger important contact, commerce, membership, and notification workflows. Update any extension-specific sender settings intentionally rather than assuming the global change overrides every message.
