How to Configure Email in Joomla

Open Joomla's mail settings

Sign in to the Administrator interface and go to System → Global Configuration → Server. Find the Mail section. Joomla uses these global settings for mail generated by the site and by extensions that use Joomla's mail service. Before changing anything, record the existing values so you can restore a known configuration if a test fails.

Set the site sender identity

Enter a From Email address that your mail provider permits and a From Name that recipients should recognize. Many SMTP providers enforce sender-domain or sender-address rules, so an arbitrary From Email can cause rejection even when authentication succeeds. Configure Reply To separately when replies should go somewhere other than the sending identity.

Choose the delivery method

Joomla can use PHP Mail, Sendmail, or SMTP. PHP Mail depends on the hosting server's PHP mail configuration; Sendmail depends on a local mail-transfer program; SMTP connects to a mail service using host, port, security, and usually credentials. For managed email services, SMTP is often the most explicit and diagnosable choice.

Use provider-specific values

Do not guess the SMTP hostname, port, encryption mode, authentication requirement, username, or password. Obtain them from the email provider or hosting company. Common combinations exist, but the provider's current documentation is authoritative. If the account uses multi-factor authentication, it may require an app password or another provider-supported authentication method.

Save and send a test message

After saving the configuration, use Joomla's Send Test Mail feature in Global Configuration. The test confirms that Joomla can attempt delivery with the selected mailer. A successful send is important, but also confirm that the message arrives and inspect spam or quarantine folders if it does not appear in the inbox.

Check delivery beyond Joomla

Joomla handing a message to a mail server does not guarantee inbox delivery. If tests leave Joomla successfully but do not arrive, review the provider's message trace or SMTP logs, DNS records such as SPF and DKIM, sender-domain policy, recipient filtering, and bounce messages. Those layers are outside Joomla's application configuration.

Document the working configuration

Record the mailer type, provider, hostname, port, encryption mode, sender policy, and who owns the mail account. Do not record plaintext passwords in general documentation. Retest after hosting migrations, PHP changes, mail-provider changes, or DNS changes so site notifications do not silently fail.
