How to Configure Gmail SMTP with Joomla

Confirm that Gmail SMTP fits the account

Use Gmail SMTP only when the Google account and organization policy permit SMTP submission. Google documents smtp.gmail.com as the outgoing SMTP server. For Google Workspace, administrators may also have organization-level relay options, so confirm the intended sending method before entering credentials in Joomla.

Configure the Gmail SMTP endpoint

In Joomla Administrator, open System → Global Configuration → Server → Mail Settings and select SMTP as the Mailer. Set SMTP Host to smtp.gmail.com. Use the secure port and transport mode documented by Google for the account; Google's published Gmail settings support port 465 for SSL and port 587 for TLS/STARTTLS.

Use the full Google account address as the username

Enter the complete Gmail or Google Workspace email address as the SMTP Username. Enable SMTP Authentication. The authenticated account must be permitted to send using the From Email address configured in Joomla; otherwise Google may reject, rewrite, or otherwise handle the sender according to account and domain policy.

Use a supported Google authentication method

Do not assume the normal interactive Google password will work in a basic SMTP username/password field. Google accounts protected by 2-Step Verification can use app passwords only when Google makes that feature available for the account. Workspace administrators can restrict authentication methods, so follow the current Google account and organization policy.

Set Joomla's sender identity deliberately

Set From Email to an address the authenticated Google account is authorized to use, and set a recognizable From Name. If you need a different sender or alias, configure and verify it through Google first rather than simply typing an unrelated From Email into Joomla.

Send Joomla's built-in test message

Save Global Configuration and use Send Test Mail. If authentication fails, verify the account, credential type, SMTP access policy, host, port, and encryption mode. If connection succeeds but delivery fails, investigate Google's sender, recipient, quota, and anti-abuse response instead of repeatedly changing the Joomla password.

Protect the credential and document the working settings

Do not place an app password or other SMTP secret in tickets, screenshots, source repositories, or ordinary documentation. Record the non-secret settings—provider, host, port, security mode, username format, and authorized sender—and keep the credential in an appropriate password or secrets manager.
