How to Configure SMTP in Joomla
Get the SMTP details from the provider
Before editing Joomla, collect the outgoing SMTP hostname, port, required transport security, authentication requirement, username format, and credential type from your email provider. Do not select a port or encryption setting merely because it is common; the server and client settings must agree.
Select SMTP in Global Configuration
Go to System → Global Configuration → Server and locate the Mail section. Set Mailer to SMTP. Joomla then exposes the SMTP-specific settings used when the site opens a connection to the outgoing mail server.
Enter the host, port, and security mode
Set SMTP Host to the provider's outgoing server and enter its required port. Select the security mode the provider specifies, such as STARTTLS or SSL/TLS. Joomla's current user documentation notes that SMTP configuration must match the host's expected port and security combination.
Configure authentication
Enable SMTP Authentication when required and enter the provider-approved username and credential. Some services accept the mailbox password, while others require an app-specific password or a different authentication arrangement. Never place credentials in tickets, screenshots, source repositories, or public documentation.
Set a permitted From address
Use a From Email that the SMTP service allows the authenticated account to send as. Some providers require an exact mailbox match; others permit verified aliases or domains. A sender-policy failure can look like an SMTP problem even when the connection and login are correct.
Send Joomla's test email
Save the settings and use Send Test Mail. Confirm both the Joomla result and actual receipt of the message. If the test fails, capture the exact error before changing several fields at once. Testing one controlled change at a time makes host, port, TLS, authentication, and sender failures easier to separate.
Keep SMTP credentials protected
Restrict access to Joomla's configuration and hosting account, use a dedicated sending account when practical, and rotate credentials when staff or providers change. If SMTP credentials may have been exposed, revoke or replace them at the provider rather than only changing unrelated Joomla passwords.
