How to Find the Correct SMTP Settings for Joomla

Start with the mail provider, not a generic settings list

The authoritative SMTP values come from the service that will relay Joomla's outgoing mail. Find that provider's current documentation or ask its administrator for the SMTP hostname, submission port, transport security, authentication requirement, username format, and credential type. Avoid copying settings from an unrelated provider.

Open Joomla's Mail Settings

In Administrator, go to System → Global Configuration → Server and locate Mail Settings. Select SMTP as the mailer when the provider requires SMTP. Joomla exposes SMTP Host, SMTP Port, SMTP Security, SMTP Authentication, SMTP Username, and SMTP Password as separate values.

Enter the provider's host and security pair exactly

Use the documented SMTP hostname rather than guessing from the email domain or substituting an IP address. Choose the security mode and port that the provider assigns to that endpoint. Current Joomla documentation lists SSL/TLS and STARTTLS options and explicitly directs administrators to use the provider's required port.

Enter the required authentication identity

If SMTP Authentication is required, use the username format specified by the provider and the credential type it supports. That may be an account password, app-specific password, or another provider-managed secret. Do not assume the From Email address is automatically the correct SMTP username.

Set a valid From Email and From Name

Joomla uses the Global Configuration sender values as defaults for outgoing mail. Choose a From Email address that the SMTP service authorizes you to send as and a recognizable From Name. Some providers reject or rewrite mail when the sender address is outside the authenticated account or verified domain.

Use Send Test Mail before testing extensions

Save the configuration and click Send Test Mail. Joomla 5.3+ documentation describes the test as a direct validation of the configured sending function. If it fails, troubleshoot the SMTP connection first; testing contact forms, commerce extensions, or notification plugins adds extra variables before the base mailer is known to work.

Document the working configuration without storing secrets

Once mail succeeds, record the provider, hostname, port, security mode, authentication requirement, username format, and authorized sender policy for future administrators. Do not put the SMTP password in ordinary documentation. Keep secrets in an appropriate password or secrets manager and update the record when the provider changes its requirements.
