How to Find Whether Joomla Actually Sent an Email
Define what 'sent' means
There are several checkpoints: Joomla can attempt to send, a local mailer or SMTP server can accept the message, and the recipient's mail system can accept and deliver it. Do not treat those as the same event. Your goal is to identify the last checkpoint for which you have evidence.
Use Send Test Mail as a controlled baseline
In System → Global Configuration → Server, use Send Test Mail. Current Joomla documentation notes that this test is sent to the logged-in administrator's email address and validates sending functionality, but it does not guarantee end-user receipt. Record the exact test time and destination address.
Capture application and mail errors
If Joomla reports an error, preserve the complete message before changing configuration. For SMTP troubleshooting that needs more detail, use Joomla's documented mail-debug logging procedure with access restricted to appropriate administrators. The resulting evidence can distinguish DNS, connection, TLS, authentication, and message-submission failures.
Check the outgoing mail service
For SMTP, inspect the provider's message activity or delivery logs when available. An accepted message with an assigned provider ID is stronger evidence than a Joomla success notice alone. With PHP Mail or local Sendmail, ask the host for the mail-transfer logs because Joomla may have handed the message to a local service whose later delivery failed.
Look for bounces and filtering
Check the configured sender mailbox for nondelivery reports, provider suppressions, quota notices, policy rejections, and authentication failures. Also inspect recipient junk and quarantine folders. A bounce or provider event often explains a missing message more precisely than repeating the Joomla action.
Test the exact Joomla workflow
A global test does not prove that registration, password reset, contact forms, or an extension notification invoked the expected message. Trigger the specific workflow and compare its timestamp with application, SMTP, and recipient logs. Confirm the recipient address and relevant Mail Template or extension settings.
Keep a short evidence trail
Record the Joomla action, time, recipient, transport, Joomla result, provider result, and final delivery result. This makes intermittent failures easier to recognize and gives the hosting or mail provider enough information to investigate without exposing passwords or other secrets.
