How to Fix Joomla Contact Form Emails Not Arriving
Confirm the contact form actually submits
Submit the affected Contacts component form and record the exact time, contact, and destination you expect. Separate form-validation or CAPTCHA failures from email failures. If the form never completes successfully, troubleshoot the form first rather than changing SMTP settings.
Verify the contact's email address
Open Components → Contacts and inspect the contact used by the menu item or contact view. Confirm that the destination email address is correct and that you are testing the intended contact record. A working global mailer cannot compensate for an incorrect or missing contact recipient.
Test Joomla's global mail transport
Use Send Test Mail in System → Global Configuration → Server. If that controlled message fails, resolve the global mailer, SMTP, hosting, or provider issue first. If it succeeds, concentrate on the Contacts component, recipient, Mail Template, plugins, CAPTCHA, or message-specific filtering.
Review the Contacts Mail Template
Joomla's Mail Templates system includes templates used by core features. Review the Contacts contact-form mail template and preserve the placeholders needed by the message. If you use Contact custom fields, Joomla's current guidance notes that the contact mail template needs the appropriate custom-fields placeholder for those values to appear.
Check spam controls without disabling protection permanently
CAPTCHA, anti-spam plugins, web application firewalls, and mail-provider filters can affect contact forms. Review their logs and temporarily isolate a suspected control only in a safe test when necessary. Do not leave public forms unprotected simply to make a test message pass.
Trace accepted messages through the provider
If Joomla submits the contact message successfully, inspect SMTP/provider logs, bounces, quarantine, sender authorization, SPF/DKIM/DMARC, and recipient rules. Contact forms can differ from test mail in From or Reply-To handling, so compare headers and provider events rather than assuming identical treatment.
Perform an external end-to-end test
After the fix, submit the public form from a normal browser session using a controlled sender address. Confirm the site accepts the form, the intended contact receives it, Reply-To behaves as expected, and no sensitive diagnostic output is visible to visitors. Then restore any temporary debugging changes.
