How to Fix Joomla Email Not Sending
Determine whether all mail or one feature is failing
Use Send Test Mail in System → Global Configuration → Server. If the global test fails, focus first on Joomla's mailer and server configuration. If the global test succeeds but one extension or event does not send, inspect that feature's recipients, triggers, templates, permissions, and extension-specific settings.
Confirm that mail sending is enabled
Review the Mail section in Global Configuration and verify the site is configured to send mail. Confirm the From Email and administrator test destination are valid. If using SMTP, verify the host, port, security mode, authentication setting, username, and credential against the provider's current documentation.
Read the exact error instead of guessing
Connection errors, authentication failures, TLS/certificate errors, and sender rejection require different fixes. Preserve the exact error text and timestamp. Joomla 6 documentation provides a mail-debugging procedure using restricted debug output and the mail logging category when the normal test does not expose enough detail.
Check hosting and network restrictions
Hosting providers and firewalls may block outbound SMTP ports or PHP mail. A localhost or development computer may also be unable to relay through the expected server. Ask the host whether outbound connections to the provider's SMTP host and port are permitted rather than repeatedly changing Joomla settings.
Check sender and provider policy
An SMTP login can succeed while the provider rejects the message because the From address is not authorized. Verify allowed aliases and domains, account status, sending limits, and any app-password requirement. For delivered-but-missing messages, inspect provider traces, spam filtering, bounces, and SPF/DKIM/DMARC alignment.
Check the extension or notification path
When only one type of Joomla message fails, confirm that its recipient exists, the relevant plugin or component is enabled, the event actually occurs, and any mail template or per-template mail options are correct. Compare with another known-working message so you can distinguish application logic from transport.
Retest after one change at a time
Change one variable, save, and run a controlled test. Record the working configuration when delivery is restored. If mail stopped immediately after a Joomla update, also check the official release notes and known-issues documentation for that exact release before replacing core files or applying a workaround.
