How to Fix Joomla SMTP Username or Password Errors
Start with the exact SMTP response
Use Send Test Mail from Global Configuration and capture the complete failure rather than relying on a generic report that email is broken. Authentication responses such as invalid credentials, authentication failed, or account disabled narrow the problem much more effectively than repeatedly retyping the same password.
Confirm the SMTP username format
SMTP providers may require a full email address, a mailbox name, or a service-specific account identifier. Copy the username format from the provider's current SMTP instructions. Do not infer it from the From Email field: Joomla stores the SMTP Username and the outgoing From Email as separate settings.
Replace the password deliberately
If the credential may be wrong, reset or regenerate it at the mail provider and then update Joomla's SMTP Password. For services that require app-specific passwords, create the credential using the provider's supported process. Never paste SMTP passwords into tickets, public logs, screenshots, or shared troubleshooting documents.
Check whether the account permits SMTP
A valid account password does not guarantee SMTP access. The provider may require SMTP AUTH to be enabled, may restrict it by organization policy, or may block the account after suspicious activity. Check the mailbox or tenant security settings and provider logs before assuming Joomla is altering the credential.
Check encryption and port before blaming the password
A client connected to the wrong endpoint or using the wrong transport security can fail before or during authentication. Verify Joomla's SMTP Host, SMTP Security, and SMTP Port against the provider's documentation. Current Joomla guidance explicitly tells administrators to ask the SMTP provider which port to use.
Rule out stale saved configuration
Save the corrected settings and then reload Global Configuration before testing again. If configuration.php cannot be written, Joomla cannot persist normal Global Configuration changes. Confirm that the displayed SMTP host, username, security, and port are the values you intended, without exposing the saved password.
Confirm success with both test and real mail
Once Send Test Mail succeeds, trigger one normal Joomla notification that uses the same mail configuration. A successful SMTP login proves authentication, but a real message can still be rejected by sender-domain policy or content filtering. Keep authentication troubleshooting separate from downstream deliverability problems.
