How to Fix Joomla User Registration Emails Not Arriving

Confirm how registration is configured

Open Users → Manage → Options and review Allow User Registration and New User Account Activation. Joomla's current user documentation describes Self activation as sending the registrant an activation link, while Administrator activation sends the user a link and later notifies the administrator after the user completes that step. Know which messages your selected workflow is supposed to generate.

Test Joomla mail globally first

Use System → Global Configuration → Server → Mail Settings → Send Test Mail. If that fails, repair the site's mail transport before troubleshooting registration. If it succeeds and arrives, the basic mail path works and you can focus on registration configuration, recipients, templates, or provider treatment of the registration message.

Verify the new user's address and status

Check the address entered during registration for spelling errors and inspect the user record in Users → Manage. Confirm that the registration actually created the expected account and review whether it is enabled or awaiting activation. Repeated tests with mistyped addresses can look like a Joomla mail failure.

Review the relevant Mail Templates

Open System → Mail Templates and inspect the user-registration and activation templates appropriate to your workflow. Joomla's Mail Templates feature controls built-in messages without requiring code edits. Preserve required placeholder tags and verify any per-template mail settings before assuming the transport is at fault.

Check administrator notification expectations

With Administrator activation, the administrator notification occurs after the registrant follows the link sent to them. If the user never receives or follows that first message, the administrator's later activation message will not occur as expected. Test the entire sequence instead of checking only the final administrator mailbox.

Trace the message after Joomla sends it

If registration creates the account and Joomla reports no send error, inspect SMTP/provider logs, bounces, spam or quarantine, sender authorization, and SPF/DKIM/DMARC results. Compare a registration message with a known-working Joomla test message to see whether content, sender, or recipient handling differs.

Retest with a controlled account

Use an address you control and complete the registration and activation process exactly as a visitor would. Record timestamps for registration, user activation, and administrator activation. Remove or clearly identify test accounts afterward so they are not mistaken for real users.
