How to Troubleshoot Joomla Password Reset Email Delivery
Confirm the reset workflow is available
The Joomla password-reset menu item and login workflow send reset information to the email address associated with the user account. First verify that the frontend login/reset path is accessible and that the user is entering the address stored on the correct Joomla account.
Check the user record without exposing account data
In Users → Manage, verify that the account exists, is not an unintended duplicate, and has the expected email address. Avoid revealing whether arbitrary public email addresses have accounts when troubleshooting with end users; password-reset behavior should not become a tool for account enumeration.
Prove the global mail path
Use Send Test Mail from Global Configuration. If Joomla cannot send the controlled test, fix the global mailer or SMTP connection first. If the test arrives but reset mail does not, investigate the reset workflow, user record, Mail Template, throttling, or message-specific delivery.
Review password-reset limits and templates
Users configuration includes controls for password reset attempts over a time period. A user who repeatedly requests resets can encounter policy limits. Also inspect the applicable Mail Template in System → Mail Templates and preserve the required reset placeholders rather than replacing them with hard-coded values.
Check spam, quarantine, and provider logs
Reset messages are automated and can be filtered even when ordinary mail arrives. Search the recipient's spam and quarantine and inspect the outgoing provider's trace, bounces, suppression status, sender authentication, and policy results. Use timestamps from a fresh controlled reset request.
Use an administrator reset when appropriate
For a verified user who cannot complete self-service recovery, an authorized administrator can edit the user and set a new temporary password or require a password reset according to site policy. Communicate credentials securely; do not place passwords in tickets, logs, or other long-lived plaintext records.
Retest the full recovery path
After correcting the problem, request a new reset, use the newest reset message, complete the verification and password change, and confirm login. Older reset tokens may no longer be the correct ones to test after repeated requests, so validate the current end-to-end flow.
